About the Team.
The BC Outback is an elite level women’s AAA
hockey club. Only the top players and personalities
are selected to the team.
We call ourselves the BC OUTBACK because it describes
who we are! This season, we have attracted the top
players from: Northern BC (Dawson Creek), the Caribou
(108 Mile House), the Okanagan (Merritt, Penticton,
Armstrong, Kamloops, Revelstoke, Vernon, Kelowna),
the Kootenay’s
(Cranbrook, Kimberly, Jaffray, Fairmont Hot Springs,
Golden, Castlegar, Kaslo), and the Island (Port Alberni).
All the players remain living at home while playing
for the Outback and train and play with their local
teams.
Each year tryouts in September determine which of the
most talented, motivated and coachable players from
across the province, get selected to the team. The BC
Outback holds camps every three weeks in various towns
throughout BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, where they
practice and play against other elite teams. The Outback
players are all assigned skills and fitness programs
to work on with their hometown teams between the Outback
camps. The objective of the team is to provide opportunities
for young women in rural BC to develop their skills,
get exposure to scouts and elite hockey, and to build
as a team in preparation for the Sr. AAA Provincial
Championships. Having this calibre of female hockey
come to the various towns in BC generates a lot of enthusiasm
and support for the female game.
The Outback manages to get in six to seven practices,
five to six ‘classroom sessions’ and 20
to 24 games each season. Despite very few practices
to bring the team together, we have attended the BC
Provincial Championships each of the last seven years
and have earned two gold and three silver medal finishes.
We believe … a remarkable accomplishment for
the obstacles that we must overcome!
